Justice From Justice

It is often said that elections have consequences. And every day the Trump Administration is proving that axiom to be true. One of the great frustrations of the Obama era was that when there was obvious corruption, as during the IRS targeting scandal, nobody got punished.

You will recall that in 2013 conservative tea party groups were harassed and denied important tax status by a politicized IRS. They were denied solely because they were conservative. The tea party groups that were wronged were never compensated.

There’s a new president and a new justice department. And, after years of litigation, DOJ has offered a settlement to tea party and other conservative groups that were targeted by the IRS under the Obama administration. In the settlement, the IRS acknowledges that it violated their rights by applying extra scrutiny and criteria to conservative groups when they applied for nonprofit status.

“The IRS’s use of these criteria as a basis for heightened scrutiny was wrong and should never have occurred,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement yesterday. “It is improper for the IRS to single out groups for different treatment based on their names or ideological positions.”

I would still like to see someone go to jail for the egregious politicization of a government agency, and perhaps that may still happen. But at least these grassroots organizations are going to be compensated and perhaps made whole again.

Left-wing Violence in America is Growing

The media have been hyperventilating for days about a speech this afternoon at the University of Florida.  Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency and mobilized hundreds of state and local law enforcement officers.  The university has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on additional security because the speaker is one of the racist leaders involved in the Charlottesville, Virginia, riots.

As vile as his views are, at least the university recognized that he has a First Amendment right to speak.  And I am confident his speech will be poorly attended, thanks to the decency of the vast majority of Floridians.

That said, there is growing fascism in America, and it is coming from the left.  Here are just three recent examples:

The fascist wing of the progressive left recently shutdown a meeting of the College Republicans at the University of California-Santa Cruz.

An Arizona restaurant was forced to close after the owners posted a message expressing their support for President Trump, our military, standing for the national anthem and first responders.  The message went viral and the owners started receiving death threats.  Vicious calls flooded into the restaurant, including threats to burn it down.

Dana Loesch, a spokeswoman for the NRA, has been forced to abandon her home and move with her children because of vicious threats from intolerant leftists, including one who threatened to rape her to death.

Whether its academics like Charles Murray, columnists like Ann Coulter or a kid wearing a MAGA hat, the circumstances are different but the theme is always the same.  Anyone expressing traditional conservative ideas and values now has to question whether they are willing to risk physical violence.  Not surprisingly, this political intimidation is affecting what people are willing to say to pollsters.

Sadly, too few voices on the left have been willing to speak up and denounce those so-called "progressives" who insist that violence is necessary.

Lock Her UP!

Comey's Cover-up

Newly uncovered emails appear to confirm what many Americans feared all along: The FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's mishandling of our national security secrets was a complete scam.

In a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) reveal that FBI officials told congressional investigators that James Comey began drafting his statement exonerating Hillary Clinton well before she was interviewed.

In fact, the timeline suggests that Comey decided to clear Clinton before FBI agents had even interviewed 16 key witnesses!

"Conclusion first, fact-gathering second -- that's no way to run an investigation. The FBI should be held to a higher standard than that, especially in a matter of such great public interest and controversy," Grassley and Graham wrote.

No doubt you will recall that there was considerable consternation within the FBI over Comey's handling of the Clinton investigation. Well, now we know why. It looks like it was a cover-up, not a real investigation.

This revelation is raising questions about the veracity of Comey's Senate testimony. After all, he blamed Loretta Lynch's tarmac meeting with Bill Clinton for his decision to go public in order to "protect the credibility of the investigation."

But if the outcome was predetermined, then the investigation never had any credibility to protect!

Every member of Congress should be issuing press releases about this Comey/Clinton scandal. This story cannot be allowed to die over the holiday weekend.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions should appoint a special prosecutor to investigate James Comey, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the Obama-era Justice Department.

The Anti-Antifa

There was this astounding headline Monday in the Washington Post:  "Black-clad antifa members attack peaceful right-wing demonstrators in Berkeley."

Put aside the question of how the Post determined that the demonstrators were "right-wing."  What makes the headline remarkable is that a major liberal newspaper finally and accurately denounced the thugs.  Antifa may be short for "anti-fascist," but it is in fact just the opposite.

The Los Angeles Times soon chimed in, decrying "violence by far-left protesters."  And on MSNBC, of all places, Joe Scarborough blasted the antifa goons as "fascists in their behavior."

A few far-left politicians have also joined the anti-antifa chorus.  Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin, who actually applauded the mob that shut down Milo Yiannopoulos in February, now wants antifa officially classified as a gang.  "They come dressed in uniforms," he observed, "and they have weapons, almost like a militia."  Hey, Mayor Arreguin, good of you to finally notice.

And the most stunning turnaround came Tuesday, when Democrat Nancy Pelosi issued a statement condemning the "people calling themselves antifa."  She added that they "deserve unequivocal condemnation."

What makes all this notable is that just over a week ago Reuters referred to the antifa agitators as "peace activists," while Democrats refused to say anything mean about the masked warriors.  So what happened to turn the tide?  Let us put forth some educated speculation.

First, professor and philosopher Noam Chomsky openly questioned antifa's goals and tactics.  Chomsky, always anti-capitalist and often anti-American, has been the guru of the radical left for decades.  When he speaks, progressives listen.

Two weeks ago Chomsky described antifa as "a miniscule fringe of the Left," and called their violence "a major gift to the right."  The professor also hammered antifa for shutting down speakers with whom it disagrees.

A few days later, professor and attorney Alan Dershowitz, another lion of the left, warned that antifa-like groups are "trying to tear down America."  He denigrated antifa as "radical, anti-American, anti-free market, socialist, communist, hard left censorial organization."

All this criticism was pre-Berkeley, which was another black mark against the black clad antifa crew.  Last weekend the left-wing gangsters assaulted a handful of people who gathered in Berkeley to march against Marxism.

The antifa radicals, their faces masked as always, chased and beat down people whom they considered Trump supporters.  It was an especially ugly scene, even by antifa standards, after which more than a dozen radicals were arrested.

If antifa and other self-styled anti-fascist groups occupied the moral high ground after Charlottesville, they surrendered it last weekend in Berkeley.

But perhaps the biggest reason for the recent opinion shift is old-fashioned politics.  Democrats can read polls as well as anyone else, probably better.  They know that most Americans do not are repulsed by masked marauders running wild in the streets.  That could explain Nancy Pelosi's surprising statement.  She desperately wants a Democratic majority in 2018, and she won't get it by ignoring or endorsing violence.

In the Senate, the two darlings of the far left – Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders – have yet to call out antifa by name, although Senator Sanders did speak out against lefties who shout down campus speakers.

Antifa will always have supporters, especially on elite campuses.  A Dartmouth lecturer named Mark Bray has become a frequent guest on mainstream networks, where he rationalizes and defends violence.  Dartmouth's president actually criticized Bray for "supporting violent protest," a rare show of courage from a university administrator.  Naturally, the left-wing Dartmouth faculty was angry not with Bray, but with the president.

But college professors aside, antifa may have overplayed its ugly hand with all the recent violence and vitriol.  Pay close attention the next time there are masked antifa protesters fomenting violence and pelting cops with urine.

Law enforcement, which once looked the other way, might step in to quickly stop the madness.  And Democrats, who were once acquiescent, might rise up in unison to denounce antifa.

That may be wishful thinking, but it would be a very welcome sign in extremely troubled times.

Washington DC Gun Laws

In an unsurprising turn, officials in the District of Columbia have decided to continue to defend their near total ban on the right to bear arms.  On Thursday, D.C. filed a petition for rehearing en banc with the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in the combined cases of Grace v. D.C. and Wrenn v. D.C.

As we reported last month, the D.C. Circuit struck down the District’s restrictive handgun permitting law that required applicants to show a “good” or “proper” reason for needing to carry a concealed handgun.  Under this system, D.C. officials have denied all but a few applicants their right to carry a firearm for personal protection.

The District’s 61 pages of arguments for why the right to bear arms shouldn’t apply in the nation’s capital can be summed up in a single reason: “we’re different.” D.C.’s petition to the court begins by claiming that “[t]he District of Columbia is unique” and “[u]nlike any city, it is filled with thousands of high-ranking federal officials and international diplomats, and it hosts hundreds of heavily attended events each year, including political marches and protests.”   The District’s 61 pages of arguments for why the right to bear arms shouldn’t apply in the nation’s capital can be summed up in a single reason: “we’re different.”

Apparently, in the minds of D.C. officials, this “uniqueness” should allow the District to infringe on the civil rights of its residents and visitors who wish to exercise their right to bear arms.  It’s unclear if D.C. officials believe that this ability to trample on civil rights allows them to restrict any of our other constitutional rights or just those rights protected by the Second Amendment.

Fortunately, the D.C. Circuit panel already refused to give any weight to the District’s “we’re special” arguments.  If the full Circuit decides to rehear this case, you’re NRA will continue to advocate for the right of all law-abiding Americans to carry a firearm for self-defense.

The American Taliban

President Trump is often ahead of the curve when it comes to various cultural issues. Yesterday morning and during his ill-advised press conference, the president said, "First it's Robert E. Lee. Then it's George Washington and Thomas Jefferson."

He's right. In spite of their contributions to our founding, Washington and Jefferson were slave owners, and there are growing calls for monuments to both men to be destroyed. But this was one of the times when Donald Trump was behind the curve.

He left out Abraham Lincoln, a bust of whom was destroyed in Chicago last night. It was also spray painted with the words "F-ck law." The same phrase was painted on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., earlier this week. This is the hate-filled anarchy the left has unleashed.

Earlier this week, we shared a Vice video that captured the imagery of the Neo-Nazis who marched in the Charlottesville horror show. Vice might want to look in the mirror because it has come down on the side of the book burners and their equivalent.

Yesterday, Vice ran a story originally entitled, "Let's Blow Up Mount Rushmore." It eventually apologized and retitled the story, but the headline was the least of the problem.

In the column, senior editor Wilbert Cooper makes it clear that America is evil and must be torn down and rebuilt. And that cannot be done unless we knock down the evil foundation of America. Consider these excerpts:

"It's hard to be critical of a system when that system becomes an article of faith, filled with myths (the cherry tree), deities (Founding Fathers), and notions of salvation (the City on a Hill). It's going to be impossible to improve America if we can't be honest about its origins and its past. . . it seems unthinkable that we will ever see a day when there is a serious push to blow up Rushmore and other monuments like it. But if that moment ever arrives, I suspect I'd be onboard."

So until monuments to the men who crafted the greatest constitutional republic in the world are destroyed, and until the concept of American exceptionalism is destroyed, Cooper and other members of the American Taliban will continue to press their attacks on America and the West.

There are deep divisions within the conservative movement regarding Donald Trump. But by all measurements, the grassroots remains overwhelmingly on his side.

To my fellow conservatives and "#NeverTrumpers" in our movement: Can you direct some of your energy used to bash Trump and start calling out the leftists whose stated goal is to completely destroy America and who are telling our children and grandchildren that they are living in an evil country?

For those liberals who are legitimately concerned about Putin and Russia: It is time to start asking why members of various radical communist groups are leading the mobs we have seen in places like Durham, North Carolina.

To Senator John McCain: Did I miss your speech condemning the radical leftists who are trying to destroy the country you defended in Vietnam? You do remember, I assume, that the mobs today attacking American memorials are cut from the same cloth as the people who spat on you and the brave men who served with you in Vietnam.

If Donald Trump is for making American great again, does that really mean that everyone who doesn't care for him must be non-combatants in the culture war to destroy America?

The Cultural Revolution

In the 1960s, China's communist rulers literally declared war against Chinese history, habits and symbols as Mao Zedong and his revolutionaries attempted to fundamentally transform China in their image. It ripped the social fabric of China. More than a million people were killed.

A similar cultural revolution may be underway in America. Last night, a mob tore down and destroyed a monument to a Southern soldier in Durham, North Carolina. According to local media reports, the mob was led by anti-fascists, the Democratic Socialists of America and the communist World Workers Party.

The fringe left is on fire. Its seething hatred of America has been unleashed. "Charlottesville is just the beginning," one far left website declared. Another proudly proclaims that "capitalism is in crisis" and "The American state is collapsing."

I am glad the North won the Civil War. But I am disgusted by the left's desire to purge our history. I am sickened by the left's disrespect for property. And I am outraged by the left's eagerness to suppress opinions it disagrees with.

The left's tendency toward totalitarianism and violent behavior is dangerous. It must be resisted just as vehemently as the racism of the KKK.

Will any reporter today ask Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or Elizabeth Warren to denounce the Communist Party and the mob violence against historical landmarks?

Carried to its logical conclusion, eventually mobs will be marching on Monticello and Constitution Hall. Al Sharpton is on the record already. He said that the Jefferson Memorial cannot be permitted to stand as a publicly funded national monument.

Ultimately, this isn't about Southern slave owners in the 1oda850s. The far left hates America -- all of it, North and South, now. Our schools all too often are not teaching American history. They are teaching anti-American history.

Obamacare Survives (for now)

The media, the entire left-wing political establishment and three renegade Republican senators -- McCain, Murkowski and Collins -- once again demonstrated why it is virtually impossible to get rid of entitlement programs.

The debate over repealing Obamacare has been dominated by talk about those potentially uninsured and those with pre-existing conditions. Forgotten in all the sturm und drang were the millions of Americans whose lives were turned upside down by Obama's quasi-socialized healthcare scheme. The entire law was built on lies.

Obama said you could keep your insurance. That was the "Lie of the Year."

Obama said you could keep your doctor. Millions couldn't.

Obama said premiums would go down. They skyrocketed.

Countless small business owners, hanging by a thread after the Great Recession, were pushed over the edge. One reason Obama never achieved 3% economic growth during his presidency was because of the crushing weight of Obamacare's taxes and regulations on job creators.

I know many conservatives are frustrated right now. But here's some perspective: Forty-nine Republican senators -- 94% of the GOP Senate caucus -- voted to begin the process of undoing Obamacare. All of the Democrats voted to preserve Obamacare, and three GOP renegades gave them the majority.

Really now?

A Revealing Reaction

The left's reaction to President Trump's announcement yesterday regarding transgendered individuals serving in the military was over-the-top in its vitriol and emotional appeals. Left-wing groups immediately played the bigotry card.

What was missing were fact-based explanations for how Obama's policy mainstreaming transgenderism and the associated costs, which are significant, help the military keep us safe and win wars.

At the risk of being politically incorrect, the military is not an equal opportunity employer. There are many reasons why people are not able to serve.

I am sure most of us feel tremendous compassion for those wrestling with gender dysphoria. Research shows these individuals are bedeviled with many psychological issues before and after "gender reassignment" surgery. This is precisely the very reason why the military should not be forced to spend billions accommodating so few people in combat deployments or other high-stress situations with cramped quarters.

Something jumped out at me yesterday as I watched the breathless coverage and read the hyperbolic tweets from Hollywood celebrities who rarely show much interest in national defense policy.

For most of the Obama Administration, there was an ongoing scandal at the Veterans Administration over the disgraceful treatment of our heroes. I am sure I don't have to remind you of what it was like to learn that our veterans who survived bullets and bombs in Baghdad were dying because of bureaucratic neglect.

Most of the people who were in tears yesterday or who were screaming into microphones or furiously tweeting at the president rarely showed such emotion as the VA scandal unfolded week after week after week. In fact, many progressives made excuses for the bureaucrats and fought efforts to hold VA officials accountable for the negligence.

So the health care of millions of American veterans didn't appear to be a high priority for the left. But the left is full of righteous indignation over a miniscule segment of active duty personnel.

That is a very revealing commentary on the growing chasm between progressive elites and average Americans.

I often get messages from frustrated readers asking, "Why can't the politicians just get along and do what is best for the country?" Well, this issue is a prime example of why it is so difficult to advance an agenda for the common good when the worldview of one side is so distorted.

My friends, we must fight for our values.

Clinton vs. Trump Jr

Here we go again. The media are in another frenzy over Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with Russians.

As you know, Hillary Clinton's campaign was haunted by scandal, not related to Russia, but her own attempts to avoid State Department regulations regarding the handling of sensitive communications. She maintained an eye-popping number of unsecured devices -- private servers, laptops, iPads, Blackberries -- from which she sent thousands of emails that she did not want others to see.

When investigators attempted to gain access to Clinton's emails, she and her lawyers engaged in an extraordinary effort to conceal them.

She deleted tens of thousands of emails she claimed were about yoga lessons and weddings.

Her private server was wiped with Bleachbit.

Devices that were surrendered were -- Surprise! -- useless. They were missing SIM cards that contained essential data.

Her aides destroyed several devices with hammers.

A laptop was "lost" in the mail.

I'm surprised she never tried the excuse, "My dog ate my emails."

In legal parlance all of this behavior relates to what prosecutors (not named Comey) would call "intent." Clearly, her intent was to hide communications that many believe would incriminate her for exploiting her government office to benefit the financial dealings of the Clinton Foundation.

By the way, she did all of this as a former first lady, former senator and lawyer in her mid-to-late 60s who has had an eye on the presidency ever since she graduated college.

Now let's compare that to the current controversy involving Donald Trump Jr., a 39-year old real estate executive who grew up in a family that had nothing to do with politics.

He finds himself in the middle of a presidential campaign, something you can't imagine unless you have done it (and I have). His father is shocking everyone with his success. Don Jr. gets an email suggesting that a lawyer from Russia may have incriminating information on Hillary Clinton.

If you believe that talking to this lawyer is illegal, would you engage in the email chain he wrote?

Would you ask other key people in the campaign to join you?

After big media makes Russian collusion a big theme, would you leave the emails on your computer?

Donald Trump Jr. is not guilty of collusion. He is guilty of not understanding how the far left will go to criminalize politics.

Coming to America

Comey: Good Riddance!

Crimes Comey refused to prosecute

This is a short list of unprosecuted crimes that Comey ignored or supported provided by The Millennium Report.

    The infamous Iran deal
    Hillary Clinton Benghazi gun running
    Ambassador Steven’s death
Eric Holder’s Fast and Furious gun running
Hillary’s private server espionage and treason
    Bush and Clinton bank bailouts
Bombing seven sovereign nations without congressional approval
Obama’s IBM Eclipse Foundation’s social networking patent theft
James Clapper’s illegal NSA/CIA/FBI surveillance and his perjury before Congress
    Obama’s energy company subsidies
Misuse of banker fines to support liberal activist groups
Theft of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
    Obama’s IRS targeting of conservatives
Obama and Clinton’s confiscations from the Bureau of Land Management
Planned Parenthood eugenics and baby parts trafficking
Gold, silver, and LIBOR rate rigging
Ignoring “missing person” reports and supporting human trafficking
Clinton Foundation theft of $2 billion under the guise of a Presidential Library fund
Hillary taking money from foreign nations while Secretary of State
Maintaining open borders and Sanctuary Cities
    Refugee trafficking and fraud
Allowing overstayed visas of more than one million people
    Non-enforcement of existing immigration laws

James Comey has been the fixer for the Clinton crime family for decades beginning in the 1990’s with Whitewater and most famously making the strong case for prosecuting Hillary Clinton for her illegal unsecured private basement server and then stunningly recommending against prosecution. But what the public did not realize is that prosecuting Clinton could expose Comey himself. That is why he is actually part of the Clinton email coverup. Good riddance!

The Insane Left

California yesterday added Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota to its growing list of states that public employees cannot travel to on official business. Celebrations immediately broke out in Texas, Alabama, Kentucky and South Dakota. (Just kidding.) Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee are already being boycotted by California bureaucrats.

What is this boycott about?

In a variety of ways, these states are safeguarding the rights of religious individuals and organizations to follow their deeply held beliefs. And the intolerant progressives who run California just can't tolerate it.

For example, in these states a Catholic charity could not be forced to provide abortion coverage to its employees. In contrast, California is forcing pregnancy resource centers to promote abortion. California also objects to states requiring girls to use the girls' bathroom and requiring boys to use the boys' bathroom. California thinks this is a violation of human rights.

Just a few weeks ago, California Gov. Jerry Brown (affectionately known as Gov. Moonbeam) strengthened his progressive credentials by hopping on a jet and traveling to Beijing to make a separate climate deal with China, the world's biggest polluter.

China is a country that does not recognize religious freedom under any circumstance that conflicts with communist rule. It imprisons dissidents. It monitors and raids Christian churches. It is threatening its smaller and weaker neighbors. For decades, China forcibly aborted women who dared to have a second child. It suppresses free speech. And China isn't exactly "gay friendly" either.

How insane is the progressive left in America? It looks at China and Texas and declares Texas to be the human rights violator.

Hiding Something?

A new Rasmussen poll finds that 50% of likely voters want Congress or the FBI to investigate allegations that Obama Administration officials abused our nation's intelligence apparatus to spy on political opponents and leak damaging information to the media. Another poll finds that 53% of voters feel that leaking classified information to the media is an act of treason.

Judicial Watch has been trying to find out the extent to which former National Security Advisor Susan Rice was involved in exposing the identities of American citizens who were caught up in foreign surveillance. But recently the group received a notice from the NSA saying it didn't have any records to turn over. Here we go again. . .

According to the NSA, Obama Administration records have been given to the Obama Presidential Library, and, "under the Presidential Records Act, presidential records remain closed to the public for five years after an administration has left office."

How convenient.

If members of an administration can commit potential crimes and hide the evidence in a library for five years, we've got big problems. This may be litigated in the courts, but we can't predict with any certainty how such a lawsuit might turn out or how long it could take.

The Republican Hit List

Over the weekend, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was upgraded from critical condition to serious. That is good news. He has undergone several surgeries already, and doctors said Friday that Rep. Scalise "will require additional operations to manage abdominal injuries and other broken bones."

As you may have heard, a "hit list" was found on James Hodgkinson's body containing the names of conservative Republicans, including personal friends of mine such as Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona.

I monitored the evening news broadcasts as this story broke over the weekend and, as best as I could tell, not one major network reported that the shooter had a target list of Republican congressmen. The media's bias is disappointing, but hardly surprising.

Talking about the list would underscore the reality that this was a premeditated attack by a left-wing extremist who had one purpose -- to kill as many Republican officials as he could. And not just any Republicans, but those members most serious about religious liberty, securing our borders and protecting the sanctity of life.

The fact that this list was a non-news story exposes yet again how much the news is filtered through a prism that benefits the left. For example, one network referred to the assassination attempt as "the baseball field shooting."

What was that about? A dispute over a foul ball? Rowdy fans getting out-of-hand?

Here's an easy test: Change the names of the victims of the crimes. For example, assume that the shooter was a Donald Trump or Ted Cruz activist. Assume that his social media pages were filled with hateful rhetoric against liberals. Assume that he went to a ballfield and opened fire on leading Democrats and that it was discovered he was carrying a hit list of other progressive politicians.

Does anyone think THAT story would be slipping from the front pages, as the Scalise shooting is?

I am still waiting for big media to start asking liberal leaders the same questions they have peppered conservatives leaders with after similar incidents in the past. "Senator Warren, Rep. Pelosi, Do you feel any responsibility for the rhetoric you use? Are you going to tone down the invective?"

Incredibly, several commentators have actually attacked Rep. Scalise. MSNBC's Joy-Ann Reid said, "It's a delicate thing, because obviously everybody is wishing the congressman well and hoping he recovers -- but Steve Scalise has a history that we've all been forced to sort of ignore on race." She also made an issue out of his support for defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Reid was referring to a speech Scalise gave in 2002 about fiscal issues, allegedly before a white supremacist group. And Rep. Cedric Richmond, a black Democrat from New Orleans, defended Scalise, saying he doesn't have "a racist bone in his body."

Again, just imagine if a Fox commentator had said, "Well, while we all want Congresswoman Gabby Giffords to recover, we can't overlook her liberal background, which millions of Americans find offensive given her support for taking away your guns and redefining marriage." That commentator would have been fired within an hour.

Comey Invalidates Special Counsel

The most startling revelation from fired FBI Director James Comey’s testimony this week was his barefaced admission that he intentionally leaked details of his private conversations with the President to the press in an effort to prompt the appointment a special counsel.

When asked Thursday by Senator Susan Collins of Maine whether he shared the memos he wrote about his conversations with President Trump with anyone outside the Department of Justice, Comey answered:

“I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter – didn’t do it myself for a variety of reasons – but I asked him to, because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel.”

This statement is tremendously important because it completely delegitimizes Robert Mueller’s so-called independent investigation and reveals it as poisoned fruit.

Think about it: Comey was the top law enforcement officer in the nation before he was fired on May 9. Had he felt a special counsel was necessary to investigate possible Russian influence in the 2016 election, he could have requested one from Congress at any time. If he felt his conversations with President Trump warranted additional attention, he could have approached Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about it.

But instead he decided to do nothing. Comey apparently didn’t think there was need for a special counsel until the Monday after he was fired, according to his testimony. In a clear act of retaliation, Comey went outside the system and shared secret information with the media via a college professor-friend, in a calculated attempt to inflict pain on the Trump Administration. Further, he said he turned all his memos about his conversations over to the special counsel upon his termination – so Mueller’s investigators already had all they needed to make their own decisions.

But Comey knows that the press feed off attacking Trump. He also knows that they have an incomplete, false understanding of the Russia investigation and would therefore gladly perpetuate the false narrative that Trump was somehow under investigation. He saw a chance to cause drama, and he took it.

Yet this is the same person who on Thursday, under oath, exonerated Trump on the Russia question. Collins asked Comey two very direct, simple questions. She asked, “whether there was any kind of investigation about the President underway” and “was the President under investigation at the time of [Comey’s] dismissal on May 9?”

For both questions – under oath – Comey answered “no.”

This kind of petty vindictiveness is so unbelievable, I wouldn’t even write this type of stuff in one of my novels. The truth is, Comey behaved exactly like a bitter employee who had just been fired. He said nasty things about everyone from President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who served the Obama administration. The common thread in his testimony was that his firing was everyone’s fault but his own.

But there’s another wrinkle in this story: Comey and Mueller are very close.

Throughout his testimony, Comey described Mueller as “one of this country’s great, great pros,” called him “the right person” to lead the Russia investigation, and said “Bob Mueller is one of the finest people and public servants this country’s ever produced. He will do it well. He is a dogged, tough person, and you can have high confidence that, when it’s done, he’s turned over all the rocks.”

When Senator John Cornyn asked whether anything Comey had testified would “impede the investigation of the FBI or Director Mueller’s commitment to get to the bottom of this,” Comey stressed that the appointment of Mueller was “a critical part of that equation.”

Let’s also not forget that 97 percent of campaign donations from Department of Justice employees went to Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. The culture and people at DOJ are predisposed to be hostile to President Trump.

So, what we have here is a fired FBI director, who leaked private material to the press, so he could get his friend appointed as a special counsel in order to take retribution on the President – with the aid of a department full of federal lawyers who would have rather seen Hillary in the White House. And we are supposed to believe this will be an objective, unbiased investigation?

Comey’s testimony – and the situation he orchestrated around it – really show the depths to which the deep state will go – working around Congress, outside of even the federal process – to damage and undermine President Trump. And it perfectly illustrates how sick the system has become.

In my new book, Understanding Trump, which will be released Tuesday, I describe deep state operatives like Comey as the permanent opposition. They will stop at nothing to mar the Trump presidency in order to keep their influence.

Make no mistake: This is not about law and order, it is not about justice, it is not even about any investigation. This is about influence peddling, this is about the search for vengeance, and this is about stopping the revolution President Trump was elected to implement.

This is everything that sickens normal Americans about the swamp.

America is on a knife’s edge. The question is now whether Republicans in Congress will have the courage to stand with President Trump and fight the deep state that was personified in Comey’s testimony Thursday.

Not Funny

"Comedian" Kathy Griffin has ignited a firestorm of revulsion and anger. She participated in a disgusting photo shoot in which she is featured holding the bloody, severed head of President Donald Trump.

President Trump tweeted that Griffin should be ashamed of herself, adding, "My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!"

The Secret Service is reportedly investigating the incident and Griffin is begging for forgiveness. The only reason she is apologizing is because the left has broken ranks and abandoned her.

For the past 10 years, Griffin has co-hosted CNN's New Year's Eve coverage. The network announced today that it has terminated its agreement with Griffin. Anderson Cooper tweeted that he was "appalled" by the photo shoot, adding that it was "clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate."

Chelsea Clinton tweeted, "This is vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president."

Donald Trump, Jr., rejected Griffin's apology as "phony," adding that it "would be a lot easier to believe if there wasn't a video of her mocking the response she knew was coming."

Tyler Shields, the so-called "artist" who did the photo shoot, said that he and Griffin "figured out the best image" before hand. Here is Shields' explanation:

"Kathy and I are friends and we worked together before. So when we started doing this shoot, she said, 'I'd love to do something political. I'd love to make a statement.' We kind of figured out what would be the best image to make out of that. . . I can't speak for her, [but] I know she [Griffin] loves to stir the pot."

Of all the things Griffin could have done to express her opposition to President Trump she chose a beheading -- something that normalizes the violence of the jihadists rampaging across the Middle East and Africa. This is an image meant to terrorize.

The real story here is that the "Resistance" -- as the left likes to call itself -- was erasing the boundaries of acceptable behavior well before the election and it has continued doing so ever since. The left feels justified in terrorizing conservatives.

There are constant suggestions that the administration is illegitimate, that the president colluded with Russia to steal the election.

White House employees have been accosted in public.

There is a constant drumbeat suggesting that the president and his supporter are Nazis. Comparisons to Hitler are routine.

There were physical attacks on Trump supporters before the election and after.

This is the atmosphere of hate the left is creating.

America's NEW violent political left

We have reported in the past about the growing violence on university campuses and attacks against conservatives in major cities. Physical assaults and violent attacks by the left are becoming more frequent. These are not isolated incidents by rogue leftists. It is part of a deliberate strategy to terrorize and silence conservatives.

That political debates can at times get heated and occasionally out of control is not surprising. Passions on hot button issues often run hot. But the left has a growing problem with violence and few responsible elected officials are calling them out about it.

The Occupy Wall Street movement, for example, formed to protest excesses in the financial industry, developed a lengthy rap sheet. Liberal pollster Doug Schoen surveyed the Occupy demonstrators and found that 31% supported violence to achieve their agenda.

Hillary Clinton's defeat did not result in any significant introspection by the left. It appears to have only further radicalized many in the "resistance." During Donald Trump's inauguration, they took to the streets of Washington, D.C., blocked public entrances, set trash on fire and attacked private property. I was accosted by two left-wing demonstrators while attempting to get to an inaugural event.

Remember the recent pipeline protests in North Dakota? Law enforcement officials collected 41 pages of social media posts against the police officers who had to confront the demonstrators. The names, addresses and pictures of law enforcement officers were posted online with threats like this one: "Every one of these cops has family . . . Make their family pay."

In one video, a progressive threatened to gang rape officers' family members and threatened to "kill your daughters, your mothers, your fathers, your grandparents, even you!"

As I wrote last week, the progressive left is increasingly engaging in fascist tactics, and The Daily Caller has outlined a number of shocking incidents. For example:

Last week, police in Tennessee charged an Obamacare supporter with felony reckless endangerment after she followed Rep. David Kustoff (R-TN) from a town hall event and attacked his vehicle.

Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) was also physically accosted by an Obamacare supporter.

Again, my friends, these are not just spontaneous outbursts. The "Resistance" is embracing violence. Let me share with you what one Huffington Post writer suggested recently:

"It's time to move beyond polite protests within specified boundaries. It's time to escalate the expression of our outrage and our anger in a massive way. Starting today and from here on, no elected official -- certainly those in the GOP defending and supporting Trump on a variety of issues, for example -- should be able to sit down for a nice, quiet lunch or dinner in a Washington, D.C. eatery or even in their own homes. They should be hounded by protestors everywhere, especially in public -- in restaurants, in shopping centers, in their districts, and yes, on the public property outside their homes and apartments, in Washington and back in their home states."

Of course, at least two members of the Trump Administration have been harassed in public places. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was accosted at an Apple store. Omarosa Manigault was accosted while shopping at a northern Virginia mall.

There was a time not that long ago during the Obama years when "civility in our public discourse" was all the rage among the media. Tea Party supporters were told to calm down and be quiet. Suddenly, those concerned media voices are silent. Virtually no one in the mainstream media or the liberal political establishment is calling out the Huffington Post for threatening Trump supporters in their homes or denouncing the left's embrace of violence.

About that Flynn Fellow

Predictably, every big media outlet had the same breathless reporting after yesterday's congressional hearing with former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. Yates told senators that she warned the White House counsel that Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was not telling the full truth about his conversations with the Russian ambassador. (Flynn did discuss sanctions when he said he had not). In addition, Barack Obama had warned Trump against hiring Flynn.

So what? As I pointed out yesterday, in what world would the Trump White House trust Barack Obama, who had also hired Flynn, fired Flynn, allowed him to travel to Moscow and reauthorized his security clearance? Obama also had engaged in an over-the-top effort to deny Trump the presidency.

There were some things we learned yesterday, and they are exactly the kind of things big media does not want the average American to know. For example:

Clapper and Yates said nothing yesterday that in any way advances the left's narrative that the Trump team colluded with Russia to steal the election from Hillary Clinton. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Sunday that there is no evidence to support that bizarre claim.

Beyond Russia's hacking, the only crime that we know of was committed by an unknown individual who leaked classified information obtained by the National Security Agency to the Washington Post. It is likely that this person is in the intelligence community or the Justice Department. The purpose of that leak was to destabilize the duly elected president and his administration. That is much more serious than a hack by Russia of the Democrat National Committee.

Perhaps the biggest revelation, which is being largely ignored by the media, was Clapper's admission that in the course of monitoring certain foreigners, the conversations of multiple members of Congress and other elected officials have been swept up in intelligence gathering efforts. Clapper also said that he had requested the name of a member of Congress or Trump associate be revealed.

The most important "witness" -- Susan Rice -- unfortunately wasn't there. Subcommittee chairman Lindsey Graham requested her testimony, but for whatever reason, she declined. Sen. Graham should subpoena Rice to compel her testimony.

I continue to believe that Rice is central to what could be the biggest political scandal in modern history -- the political abuse of our national security apparatus by the Obama Administration, which is a far bigger story than whatever Michael Flynn said to the Russian ambassador.

You may recall that on April 5th I asked why do we believe that only Trump was monitored. Why not Bernie Sanders or other GOP candidates? Yesterday, Sen. Rand Paul sent a letter to the Senate Intelligence Committee demanding to know whether he and other members of Congress were monitored by the Obama Administration.

Journalists have suggested that while Obama was cooperating with an enemy of the United States (Iran), his operatives in U.S. intelligence agencies spied on the opponents of the Iranian nuclear deal, many of whom talked with officials of the Israeli government.

Here's an interesting question: Was anyone in the intelligence community monitoring Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry to see if they were colluding with Iran to undermine an ally of the United States?

Obama: Iran's Washington Lobbyist

Months ago, I argued that the Iranian nuclear deal was so bad that it was hard to see how Barack Obama was acting as anything other than a lobbyist for the Islamic Republic. Tehran got virtually everything it demanded. Time and again, the U.S. constantly gave in to Iranian demands for more concessions.

The deal was so bad that Obama plotted to avoid the Constitution's treaty approval process because he knew it would never pass muster with the people's representatives.

The deal was so bad that Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes even admitted to lying about it in order to deceive the public.

Not surprisingly, we are still learning just how bad this deal is and how much we were lied to by the Obama Administration.

What is surprising is the source of the latest revelations -- Politico, a reliably liberal publication. Many Washington conservatives are shocked that Politico "committed an act of journalism."

Sarcasm aside, we are now learning that there was another "hidden giveaway" involved in the deal. Politico reports that the Obama White House "derailed its own much-touted National Counterproliferation Initiative at a time when it was making unprecedented headway in thwarting Iran's proliferation networks."

How so? Obama freed several Iranians who were intimately involved in Tehran's illegal weapons trade.

When Obama made the announcement, as part of a hostage swap, he again lied to the American people. On January 17, 2016, Obama said that he was releasing seven Iranians as part of a "one-time, humanitarian gesture." He added, "These individuals were not charged with terrorism or any violent offenses." He added that they were "civilians."

Here are the facts from Politico's investigation:

Three allegedly were part of an illegal procurement network supplying Iran with U.S.-made microelectronics with applications in surface-to-air and cruise missiles.

One was serving an eight-year sentence for conspiring to supply Iran with satellite technology and hardware.

In addition, the Justice Department dropped charges and international arrest warrants against 14 other men.

Three sought to lease Boeing aircraft for an Iranian airline that had supported Hezbollah.

A fourth was charged with conspiring to buy thousands of assault rifles for Iran.

A fifth was part of a procurement network that provided Iran with components for an especially deadly type of IED known to have killed hundreds of American troops in Iraq.

Politico writes that federal prosecutors and investigators "were shocked and angry." One former federal law enforcement supervisor said, "They didn't just dismiss a bunch of innocent business guys."

But there was more. The Obama Administration sabotaged active investigations. "Justice and State Department officials denied or delayed requests from prosecutors and agents to lure some key Iranian fugitives to friendly countries so they could be arrested," Politico writes.

A weapons proliferation expert added, "This is a scandal. The cases bear all the hallmarks of exactly the kinds of national security threats we're still going after. It's stunning and hard to understand. . ."

Thankfully, President Trump has ordered his national security team to reevaluate the Iranian nuclear deal. In the meantime, the White House should identify and fire any Obama officials involved in this scandal.

March for Science

As you know, there were "non-partisan" March for Science demonstrations in many U.S. cities over the weekend, including here in Washington, D.C. Of course, they really weren't non-partisan.

They were thinly-veiled anti-Trump, anti-conservative gatherings. Some of these same folks were in Washington after the inauguration marching around town with "vagina hats" on their heads. Don't ask.

I can say with certainty that the crowd was selective in its love of science. For example, I saw no signs defending two scientific truths that the left rejects: Life beings at conception and there are only two genders.

Can someone please give these "geniuses" a biology textbook?

Left-Wing Hate Speach

Former Vermont Governor Dr. Howard Dean has weighed in on the Ann Coulter/Berkeley controversy. He tweeted, "Hate speech is not protected by the first amendment."

When leftists like Howard Dean say hate speech is not protected by the First Amendment then the first question we should ask is, "What does Howard think is hate speech?" We just went through an entire election cycle in which the left told us every day what hate speech was.

According to the left, hate speech is saying that some illegal immigrants commit crimes. (By the way, the Trump Administration warned nine sanctuary cities today that they had to prove their compliance with federal law or risk losing federal dollars.)

According to the left, hate speech is saying that marriage is between a man and a woman.

According to the left, hate speech is saying that terrorist acts are being committed by radical Islamists.

Just like hate crimes, hate speech is a one-way street. Hate speech is any speech that offends the left.

Little Howard Dean wannabes on university campuses say it is hate speech if you cite research proving that most police officers really are good guys. And of course, flying the Confederate flag is hate speech. But burning an American flag is not.

A mural featuring a decapitated Donald Trump is free expression. Saying the NRA is more dangerous than ISIS is free speech.

But it is hate speech to say we should limit immigration from nations that have large radical Islamic populations. It is not hate speech to say that the flag of Islam will fly over the White House.

My point is simply this: Increasingly the left, including the left-wing media, define mainstream conservative ideas as hate speech.

So don't dismiss the Howard Deans of the world when they tell you that hate speech isn't protected by the First Amendment. They mean it and they mean to shut you up.

One of the reasons the country is so on edge is that at least half of America understands that the other side wants to make it impossible to defend our values.

the REAL fascists

Left-wing Fascism At Berkeley

For the third time in as many months, the University of California, Berkeley, has banned a leading conservative from speaking on campus. The latest victim of the radical left's fascism is author and commentator Ann Coulter.

In a statement announcing the cancellation of Coulter's April 27th appearance, Berkeley administrators declared, "Given currently active security threats, it is not possible to assure that the event could be held successfully -- or that the safety of Ms. Coulter, the event sponsors, audience, and bystanders could be adequately protected -- at any of the campus venues."

How pathetic!

Initially, Berkeley made several absurd demands. For example, the university demanded that Coulter speak only during the day -- when students are in class. She agreed.

Then Berkeley demanded that the event be closed to the public and that only students could attend. Coulter agreed.

Then Berkeley said that the location could not be announced until right before the event was set to begin. In other words, Berkeley did its best to ensure that virtually no one would be able to attend her speech. But Coulter accepted all these conditions.

She asked in return only that the rioters be prosecuted and that students who engaged in violence be expelled. Well, that was too much for Berkeley. Rather than defend free speech and uphold the rule of law, Berkeley cancelled Coulter's appearance.

Berkeley is a sad example of how our institutions of higher learning are becoming "Constitution/Conservative Free Zones," where the First Amendment's freedom of speech does not apply to conservatives.

Coulter, however, is unbowed. "They can't stop me. I'm an American," she said. "I have constitutional rights. . . The speech will go on."

I am glad Coulter isn't backing down. The left's fascist tactics and its totalitarian tendencies must be exposed and resisted. Public institutions that refuse to guarantee First Amendment freedoms and fail to enforce public safety should lose access to public dollars.

Think about that!

Sessions Gets Serious

While the media continue to pursue the narrative that Donald Trump cannot accomplish anything, day by day the Trump Administration is rolling back the last eight years of disastrous policies.

For example, Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited the southern border yesterday and announced new initiatives intended to seriously address illegal immigration. Attorney General Sessions bluntly warned:

"For those who continue to seek improper and illegal entry into this country, be forewarned: This is a new era. This is the Trump era. The lawlessness, the abdication of duty to enforce our laws, and the catch and release policies of the past are over."

In stark contrast to the Obama Administration's abuse of "prosecutorial discretion," Attorney General Sessions yesterday directed federal prosecutors to charge repeat illegal entry offenders with a felony. Illegal immigrants caught with fake documents or IDs will be charged with aggravated identity theft.

While Obama's weak policies invited massive waves of illegal immigration, Trump's tough stance is having an immediate effect: Border crossings have fallen to their lowest levels in 17 years!

President Trump is already producing positive results. So much for the media's "do nothing" narrative.

The Fascist Left

Heather MacDonald, a widely respected researcher, was prevented from speaking last week at Claremont McKenna College by a violent mob of demonstrators. I don't know how MacDonald defines herself politically, but I do know she is very pro-law enforcement. And that was too much for the left-wing students and Black Lives Matter radicals on campus.

MacDonald wanted to explain that the police "are the most dedicated workers in government who make sure black lives matter." But the "tolerant" left once again employed fascist tactics to shut her down.

Hiram E. Chodosh, president of the college, issued a statement saying that "any forced interventions or arrests would have created unsafe conditions for students, faculty, staff, and guests."

Sorry, President Chodosh, but silencing free speech and giving in to the demands of radicals is the wrong response. Your cowardice only emboldens the real fascists in America -- the radical left.

The left's disrespect for our most basic constitutional rights must be aggressively resisted. Radicals who disrupt public events should be arrested and prosecuted. Institutions of higher learning that cannot or will not protect free speech should lose taxpayer funding.

And more of our political leaders on both sides of the aisle should speak up and condemn the violence and harassment that is routinely committed by progressive storm troopers.
